Henry Fielding was born on 22 April 1707 at Sharpham Park in Somerset, England, and educated at Eton College. Alongside Samuel Richardson, he is regarded as one of the founders of the English novel, having begun his career writing plays before turning to fiction. His comic masterpiece Tom Jones, published in full as The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, in 1749, follows its good-natured hero on a picaresque journey across England, and remains one of the most widely read novels of the eighteenth century alongside his earlier Joseph Andrews.
Fielding died on 8 October 1754 in Lisbon, Portugal, where he had travelled seeking better health.
