Returns, Refunds and Exchanges

Facts & Fiction Online Bookstore — last updated 24 September 2026

1. Every book is one copy, described honestly

Every book on this site is second-hand and there is only one of it. Each listing tells you whether it is hardcover or softcover, read or unread, whether the cover is damaged, and whether there is any water or weather damage.

The photograph on a listing shows the title, not the actual copy. The condition note is what describes the book you will receive. If the condition note and the photograph seem to disagree, the condition note is correct — ask us and we will clear it up before you buy.

2. Ask before you buy — we would rather you did

Because each copy is unique, we encourage you to check it before paying:

  • Ask for photographs of the actual copy. Email admin@factsandfiction.net or WhatsApp 084 703 6129 with the title, and we will photograph the real book — spine, cover, page edges, any marks.
  • Come and look at it. Collection can be arranged in Centurion, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 13:00. You are welcome to handle the book before you decide.

A question costs nothing. We would far rather answer three questions than have a disappointed reader.

3. No exchanges

We do not exchange books. There is only ever one copy of each title, so there is nothing to swap it for.

4. No change-of-mind returns

Once a book has been delivered or collected, we do not take it back because you decided you did not want it after all, or because you have finished with it.

The seven-day cooling-off right in section 44 of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act does not apply to books: section 42(2) of that Act expressly excludes the sale of newspapers, periodicals, magazines and books. This is why we go out of our way to describe condition accurately and to send photographs or let you view a book first — the checking happens before the sale, not after it.

5. What we will always put right

If we got it wrong, we fix it at our cost. Contact us within seven days of receiving the book, with a photograph, if:

  • you received the wrong book;
  • the book is materially not as described — damage or a defect that the listing did not disclose;
  • the book was damaged in transit;
  • pages are missing or the text is unreadable.

In those cases we pay the return shipping and refund you in full, including what you paid for delivery. If you would prefer a different book to the same value, we will gladly do that instead.

Nothing in this policy limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.

6. What is not a fault

These books are second-hand and priced accordingly. The following are normal and are not grounds for a refund, unless the listing said the book was free of them:

  • yellowed, foxed or tanned pages;
  • shelf wear, bumped corners, a creased spine;
  • a previous owner’s name, inscription or bookplate;
  • a price sticker or library marking;
  • the smell of an old book.

7. How to raise something

Email admin@factsandfiction.net or WhatsApp 084 703 6129 with your order number and a photograph. We answer within two working days.

Approved refunds are paid by bank transfer back to the account the payment came from, within seven working days of the book reaching us or of us agreeing the refund, whichever comes first.

8. Cancelling before dispatch

If you have not yet paid, simply tell us and we will release the book. If you have paid by EFT and the book has not yet been dispatched or collected, we will refund you in full.
