Ben-Hur first appeared in Afrikaans in 1923 in a translation by Dr H.A. Steyn. This is the thoroughly revised Afrikaans edition, first printed in 1953; this copy is the second printing of 1963.

Lew Wallace was born on 10 April 1827 in Brookville, Indiana. He served as a Union general in the American Civil War, having also fought in the Mexican-American War, and went on to a career in public life as Governor of the New Mexico Territory and United States Minister to the Ottoman Empire. Alongside this, he wrote Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880), listed here in Afrikaans, an account of a Jewish nobleman betrayed by his Roman friend that became one of the best-selling American novels of the nineteenth century.
Wallace died on 15 February 1905 in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
