Harold L. Klawans was an American neurologist who built a second career as a writer. Born in 1937, he trained at the University of Illinois and spent most of his working life at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he founded a movement-disorders clinic and became an authority on Parkinson's disease. He wrote medical textbooks, a popular series of clinical tales beginning with Toscanini's Fumble, and mystery novels including Sins of Commission and The Jerusalem Code. Deadly Medicine, published in 1990, belongs to his fiction.
Klawans died in March 1998. His storytelling approach to neurology, often compared with that of Oliver Sacks, still draws readers to his clinical tales.
