Thomas à Kempis was born around 1380 in Kempen, in the Prince-Archbishopric of Cologne. An Augustinian canon of the Congregation of Windesheim, he entered the monastery of Mount St Agnes near Zwolle in 1406, was ordained a priest in 1413 and later served as sub-prior, copying the Bible by hand four times over his lifetime. He is remembered above all as the author of The Imitation of Christ, written around 1418 to 1427 and one of the most widely read works of Christian devotion ever produced; Die Navolging van Christus, listed here, is its Afrikaans edition.
Thomas à Kempis died on 1 May 1471 in Zwolle, in what is now the Netherlands.
