Mikro was the pen name of Christoffel Hermanus Kühn, born 8 October 1903 on the farm Van Reenensplaas in the Williston district of the Northern Cape. Trained as a teacher and agricultural scientist at Stellenbosch University, he taught school before turning to writing full time in the 1940s. He became one of Afrikaans literature's most prolific storytellers, publishing more than a hundred novels and children's books, many set on the farm and the veld, including Ruiter in die Nag and Die Jongste Ruiter. His work earned him the Hertzog Prize for Prose in 1936 and later the W.A. Hofmeyr and Scheepers prizes.
Mikro died of a heart attack on 17 April 1968 in Somerset West, leaving his final novel, Ursula, unfinished; it was completed from his notes and published after his death.
