Oswald Chambers was born on 24 July 1874 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He trained for the ministry and, in 1911, founded and led the Bible Training College in Clapham, London, before serving as a chaplain to Australian and New Zealand troops in Cairo during the First World War. My Utmost for His Highest, compiled after his death by his widow, Biddy Chambers, from his shorthand notes, gathers 365 daily readings and has been translated into dozens of languages; My Allerbeste vir Sy Hoogste, listed here, is its Afrikaans edition.
Chambers died on 15 November 1917 in Cairo, Egypt, aged 43, following complications from surgery.
