John Bunyan was born in 1628 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England, the son of a tinker whose trade he followed after only a few years of schooling. He served in the Parliamentary army during the Civil War, and after the Restoration was repeatedly imprisoned for preaching without a licence outside the established church; it was during one of these imprisonments that he began The Pilgrim's Progress, the allegory of the journey from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City that made him one of the most widely read authors in the English language. Part One appeared in 1678 and Part Two in 1684.
Bunyan died on 31 August 1688 in London, having fallen ill after riding through heavy rain from Reading.
