Paula was the pen name of Johanna Margaretha Sauerman, born on 6 November 1907 in the Albertinia district in the south-western Cape. One of the most widely read Afrikaans romance novelists of her era, she published more than sixty books over five decades, choosing to write in Afrikaans because, she said, thinking in the language and then composing in English never suited her. Heldersig, listed here, appeared in 1951 as a sequel to her 1946 novel Versperde Weë.
Paula died on 23 February 1996.
