Alfred Duggan was born in 1903 in Lomas de Zamora, near Buenos Aires, and moved to England as a young child. Educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford, he took part in archaeological digs in Turkey and Greece before the Second World War, then served with the London Irish Rifles. He came to fiction late, publishing his first novel around 1950, and went on to write roughly a book a year for the rest of his life. His historical novels, including Founding Fathers, an account of the legendary founding of Rome, drew on his deep knowledge of the ancient and medieval worlds; he also wrote biographies of figures such as Thomas Becket and Henry II.
Duggan died on 4 April 1964 at his home in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England.
