Brian Cleeve was born in Southend-on-Sea, England, in 1921, to an Irish father and an English mother. He served with the King's African Rifles during the Second World War, then spent several years in South Africa in the late 1940s and early 1950s, where his opposition to apartheid led to his expulsion from the country. He settled permanently in Ireland in the 1950s and became a familiar broadcaster on Irish television and radio, while writing more than twenty novels and over a hundred short stories. Judith, published in 1978, is the third in a series of historical novels he set in late eighteenth-century England.
Cleeve died on 11 March 2003 in Dublin, Ireland.
