Clifford Irving (1930–2017) was an American novelist and investigative reporter, born in New York City. He published some twenty novels, among them On a Darkling Plain (1956), The Valley (1960) and Final Argument (1990), listed here, but is best known for the hoax of 1971–72, in which he and a collaborator produced a fake autobiography of the billionaire Howard Hughes. Irving confessed and served 17 months in prison; the story was filmed as The Hoax (2007), with Richard Gere in the title role.
Irving died in Sarasota, Florida, on 19 December 2017.
