Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, best known for his poetry and for short stories of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as one of the central figures of Romanticism and Gothic fiction in the United States and of early American literature. His story The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841) is often called the first modern detective story. The Fall of the House of Usher and other stories, listed here, collects some of his best-known tales.
