Hendrik Stephanus Hertzog van Blerk, who published as H.S. van Blerk, was a South African novelist and poet born in 1915. A member of the Ossewa-Brandwag during the Second World War, he was sentenced to death in 1942 for damaging state property, a sentence later commuted, and he began writing in earnest inside Pretoria Central Prison. After his release in 1948 he produced a long stream of novels, youth fiction, short stories and Afrikaner history. Stormjaer, first published in 1968 as En drie maal kraai die haan, was the first Afrikaans novel to dramatise the Ossewa-Brandwag years, told through the love story of an Afrikaner man and an English woman. Other titles include Die mynramp, Kroniek van die kampkinders and Biegverse uit die dodesel.
Van Blerk died in December 2010. Late in life the FAK and the ATKV honoured him for a lifetime of Afrikaans storytelling.
