Irwin Shaw was born on 27 February 1913 in the Bronx, New York. He made his name as a playwright with Bury the Dead in 1936, then built a long career as a novelist and short-story writer, twice winning the O. Henry Award. His novels The Young Lions and Rich Man, Poor Man both sold millions of copies, and the latter became a hit television mini-series in 1976. Acceptable Losses, published in 1982, is one of his later novels, following a New York literary agent who receives a threatening late-night phone call and looks back over his life.
Shaw died on 16 May 1984 near Davos, Switzerland, at the age of 71.
