John Christoffel Kannemeyer was a South African literary historian, critic and biographer, the foremost chronicler of Afrikaans writing in his lifetime. Born in Robertson in the Western Cape in 1939, he taught at the universities of Cape Town, the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch and later worked as a research specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council. His two-volume Geskiedenis van die Afrikaanse literatuur was condensed into Die Afrikaanse literatuur 1652-1987 and later extended as Die Afrikaanse literatuur 1652-2004; the survey offered here is from that line of work. His biographies of D.J. Opperman, C.J. Langenhoven, C. Louis Leipoldt, Uys Krige, Etienne Leroux and J.M. Coetzee earned him the Recht Malan Prize three times.
Kannemeyer died in December 2011 in Stellenbosch. His literary histories remain the standard reference works on Afrikaans literature.
