Johannes Meintjies was born on 19 May 1923 on a farm near Molteno in the Eastern Cape. A painter as well as a writer, he trained and exhibited in Cape Town before retiring to the family farm in 1965 to concentrate on writing, eventually producing some thirty-five books, many of them works of South African history and biography, alongside broadcasting and playwriting. Stormberg, on the site, is one of his historical works from this later, prolific period of his career.
Meintjies died on 7 July 1980 in Molteno, at the age of 57.
