Hendri Leon Francious Maré was born on 14 September 1889 in Pietersburg, the youngest of seven children of a magistrate. He worked as a civil servant in the Department of Justice before becoming a government translator, eventually state translator in the Department of Commerce and Industry, a post he held until his retirement in 1940. Writing under the name Leon Maré, he won the Hertzog Prize for prose in 1920 for Ou Malkop and is regarded as one of the early pioneers of Afrikaans prose fiction, though he is little remembered today. Togwaens, listed here, appeared in 1956, decades into a writing career that also produced Pronkdae, youth fiction and plays.
Maré died on 1 May 1983 in Pretoria.
