C.F.J. Muller was born in 1916 and educated at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch before winning a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford in 1938, where he began his doctoral research on the Great Trek. He earned his doctorate cum laude at Stellenbosch University in 1947, lectured there from 1945, and went on to head the History Department at the University of South Africa from 1946 until his retirement in 1979. He compiled and edited Five Hundred Years: A History of South Africa, published in Afrikaans as 500 Jaar Suid-Afrikaanse Geskiedenis and listed here, a wide-ranging survey written by a team of specialist historians under his editorship.
Muller died in 1992.
