R.L. Stevenson

Robert Louis Stevenson was born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. A novelist, poet and travel writer plagued by ill health for much of his life, he found lasting fame with Treasure Island (1883) and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), the gothic novella of a respectable doctor and his violent alter ego, listed here in Afrikaans as Dr. Jekyl en Mnr Hyde. In his last years he settled in Samoa, where he was known to and much loved by the local community.

Stevenson died on 3 December 1894 at his home in Vailima, Samoa.
