Samuel Eliot Morison was born on 9 July 1887 in Boston, Massachusetts, and spent virtually his entire academic career at Harvard, where he taught history for forty years. Commissioned into the US Naval Reserve in 1942, he sailed with the fleet to research his fifteen-volume History of United States Naval Operations in World War II, and later rose to rear admiral. He won the Pulitzer Prize for History twice, for Admiral of the Ocean Sea (1943) and John Paul Jones (1960), and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. The American Revolution 1764-1788, listed here, gathers sources and documents on the Revolution and the framing of the federal constitution.
Morison died on 15 May 1976 in Boston.
