Steve Lopez was born in 1953 in Pittsburg, California, and studied at San Jose State University. After working at several newspapers and Time Inc. magazines, he has been a columnist for the Los Angeles Times since 2001 and has been a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his reporting on subjects including elder care, homelessness and California's housing crisis. The Soloist, listed here, grew out of his newspaper columns about Nathaniel Ayers, a Juilliard-trained musician he encountered living on the streets of Los Angeles, and was later made into a 2009 film starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.
As of 2026 Lopez continues to write his column for the Los Angeles Times.
