Terry McMillan was born on 18 October 1951 in Port Huron, Michigan. Her 1987 debut, Mama, won an American Book Award, but it was Waiting to Exhale, listed here, that made her one of the most prominent American novelists of the 1990s, spending months on the New York Times bestseller list and, on its 1995 film adaptation starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett, helping to reshape the publishing and film industries' approach to Black popular fiction. She later wrote How Stella Got Her Groove Back, also adapted for film, and a sequel to Waiting to Exhale, Getting to Happy.

As of 2026 McMillan continues to work in publishing and television, including a production partnership announced in 2024.
