Totius was the pen name of Jacobus Daniël du Toit, born on 21 February 1877 in Paarl in the Cape Colony, the son of the language activist S.J. du Toit. He served as a chaplain to Boer commandos during the Second Boer War before becoming a minister of the Reformed Church and, from 1911, a professor at its theological school in Potchefstroom, later serving as chancellor of what became Potchefstroom University. He completed his father's work on the Afrikaans Bible translation and became one of the most celebrated Afrikaans poets, winning the Hertzog Prize for Trekkerswee. Keur uit die Gedigte van Totius, listed here, gathers a selection of his poetry.
Totius died on 1 July 1953 in Pretoria.
